Lock and key service in Kirkwood

Kirkwood has one of the oldest housing stocks in St. Louis County, and it shows in the door hardware. A lot of the homes around Kirkwood Road and the Historic District still run original mortise locks — the kind with a rectangular lock body mortised into the edge of the door rather than a modern bored cylinder. Big-box stores don’t stock replacements that fit, and most handymen will tell you the whole door needs replacing.

Usually it doesn’t. A worn mortise lock can often be rebuilt or rekeyed at a fraction of the cost of new hardware, and it keeps the original look of the door. That’s the single most common call we get in Kirkwood.

What we handle here

  • Home lockouts — non-destructive entry wherever possible
  • Mortise lock repair and rebuild on older Kirkwood homes
  • Lock rekeying after a purchase, a move, or a lost key
  • Deadbolt installation, including on older doors that need reinforcement
  • Smart and keypad locks — with a note of caution, since many retrofit smart locks don’t fit older door prep
  • Commercial work for shops and offices along Manchester Road and downtown Kirkwood
  • Car lockouts and key replacement

Older doors need a different approach

Two things come up constantly on century homes in Kirkwood and neighbouring Webster Groves. First, the door frame is often the weak point rather than the lock — a Grade 1 deadbolt in a frame held by half-inch screws gives you very little. Reinforcing the strike plate with three-inch screws into the stud costs almost nothing and does more for security than upgrading the lock.

Second, seasonal movement. Kirkwood’s older homes shift enough between summer humidity and winter dry that a door latching fine in January will bind in July. If your deadbolt is getting hard to throw, that’s usually alignment rather than a failing lock, and it’s a quick adjustment.
